James de Lacey, a New Zealand-born strength and conditioning expert turned entrepreneur, has carved an unconventional path from the rugby fields of his homeland to the sprawling suburbs of Texas.

Once a Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Romanian Rugby Union and a major player in U.S. Major League Rugby, James has transitioned to building a thriving digital presence and several online ventures, all while managing the demands of family life with two children under three.

A life in transition

James’s journey to the United States was fueled by his professional expertise and a desire to explore new opportunities.

His extensive coaching background, including time with the NZ Women’s National Rugby League Team and Austin Elite Rugby, allowed him to seamlessly pivot into digital entrepreneurship, applying the same discipline and structure he honed in sports to his business ventures.

“Transitioning from coaching to running my own businesses wasn’t easy,” James reflects. “In coaching, you’re focused on maximising performance for others, but as an entrepreneur, you’re constantly pushing your own limits to build something sustainable. It’s a different kind of pressure, but one I thrive on.”

Now based in Texas, James runs multiple businesses, including his flagship website, Sweet Science of Fighting and Lift Big Eat Big which merges his coaching expertise with his passion for combat sports.

The platform offers resources, training programs, and expert advice for aspiring and professional fighters.

He also contributes to the coaching community as an author on platforms like SimpliFaster, providing insights into athletic performance and sports science.

Managing a full plate

James’s daily routine reflects his strategic mindset. He works primarily from home, a choice that allows him to spend time with his young children while maintaining focus on his businesses.

“My mornings are sacred,” he shares. “That’s when I get to spend time with the kids before the workday begins. It’s chaotic but grounding. Once I dive into work, I know I’ve already had that family connection.”

Balancing tasks like content creation, business management, and strategy development, James uses his evenings for quality family time—a conscious effort to create a boundary between work and personal life.

As a YouTube creator, James adds another layer to his already busy schedule. His channel provides training tips and performance strategies, blending his professional expertise with his personal passion for education.

“Content creation is a creative outlet for me,” he explains. “It’s a way to connect with people on a different level and share my knowledge in a way that’s accessible and practical.”

Lessons in balance

For James, the secret to balancing work and family lies in prioritisation and adaptability. He emphasises the importance of planning ahead while staying flexible enough to pivot when life demands it.

“Fatherhood has taught me patience and adaptability in ways I never expected,” he says. “Sometimes the best-laid plans go out the window when a toddler needs your attention. That’s life, and it’s beautiful in its unpredictability.”

His transition from a physically demanding career in sports to an equally challenging yet rewarding role as an entrepreneur is a testament to his ability to adapt and thrive.
